Requesting Excusal

Requests for excusal must be in writing.  You may submit these requests by email to wyojury@wyd.uscourts.gov or via physical mailing to the address listed under the court locations tab on this website.  Please be sure to include your participant number and telephone number.  Also, please be as specific as possible in your request so the totality of your circumstances may be considered.

The following occupational classes or groups of persons may be excused from jury service upon individual requests at the discretion of the Court:

  1. Persons over 70 years of age.
  2. A person who has served as a grand or petit juror within the last two years.
  3. A person having active care and custody of a child or children under ten years of age whose health and/or safety would be jeopardized by their absence for jury service; or a person who is essential to the care of aged of infirm persons.
  4. A person whose services are so essential to the operation of a business, commercial or agricultural enterprises, that it must close or cease to function if required to perform jury duty.
  5. Actively practicing or engagement full-time in one of these occupations: Attorney, Physician, Dentist, Registered Nurse, Member of the Clergy or of a religious order.
  6. Volunteer safety personnel who are defined as follows: Individuals serving a public agency (as defined in Section 1203(6) of Title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968) in an official capacity, without compensation, as firefighters or members of a rescue squad or ambulance crew.

Additionally, requests for excusal from jury duty may be made as set forth below.  However, please note that all requests are at the discretion of the Court and may be denied accordingly.

Permanent excusal – If you wish to submit a request for permanent excusal, please make sure that your situation is listed above. 

Medical excusal – If you wish to submit a request for a medical excuse, you must submit documentation from your medical provider at the time you request excusal.  The Court cannot call and verify your medical condition with your doctor.  Click here for the medical excuse form.

Temporary excusal – We understand life happens.  You can certainly request temporary excusals for time periods throughout your service term.  If you wish to submit a request for temporary excusal for things such as vacation, medical appointments, work travel etc., you  must submit the request in writing ten days in advance of the date(s) you are asking to be excused for.  The Court will make every effort to accommodate temporary absences during your service term.
